ACNE SCAR LASER TREATMENT
Acne scars are one of the most difficult skin conditions to treat. However, treating patients with acne scars can be extremely rewarding for the physician. Along with treating existing acne scars, preventing acne and the development of further scarring is also a central goal in treatment.
Sufferers of acne are often left with deep scars and depressions on the face and body, which can be psychologically and emotionally damaging. There are a number of treatment options that can improve the appearance of acne scarring, although some are more effective than others. Some treatment options include:
- Excision/subcision (subcutaneous incision-less surgery)
- Chemical peels (TCA (trichloroacetic acid) CROSS, glycolic acid)
- Dermabrasion
- Facial fillers
- Fractionated CO2 laser resurfacing
- Sublative skin resurfacing (Radiofrequency)
LUMENIS ULTRAPULSE ENCORE…THE NEXT GENERATION IN FRACTIONAL TECHNOLOGY
The Lumenis Ultrapulse laser is capable of three treatments: Active FX, Deep FX, and Total FX (a combination of both Active FX and Deep FX). The Active FX treatment safely and precisely removes skin to a pre-determined depth, while the Deep FX treatment breaks up collagen within the scars. As the collagen remodels over the ensuing weeks, the skin is smoothed and the scars build up to the level of healthy skin. Because acne scars often have deep skin indentations, multiple treatments are often necessary. Most patients notice significant improvement after 3 to 4 Total FX treatments.

SUBLATIVE SKIN REJUVENATION: A NEW APPROACH TO ACNE SCARS
While Total FX laser resurfacing is an extremely effective treatment, not all patients are good candidates for treatment. For patients with darker skin types, there can be some darkening of the skin temporarily after treatment. In addition, some patients are unable to undergo a week of downtime after Total FX treatment. Fortunately, there is an excellent alternative for these patients: Sublative Skin Resurfacing.
Fraxel offers a number of treatments, one being Sublative Skin Resurfacing. These treatments apply Nd Yag laer to the skin in order to stimulate collagen production. It has been shown to be very effective for most patients with acne scars. However, patients with deep ‘ice pick’ acne scars may not respond as well to treatment. Patients typically undergo multiple treatments separated by one-month intervals.

A. Most patients notice an improvement after the skin peels, but collagen growth and remodeling leads to additional improvement and refinement over a period of approximately three to six months. While some patients notice improvement after only one treatment, most patients will benefit from multiple treatments.
A. There are many advantages of the Lumenis Ultrapulse over other fractionated CO2 lasers. As a pulsed laser, the Ultrapulse is able to safely generate a much higher energy than other lasers, with no increase in complications or risk. The Ultrapulse is considered by many to be the ‘gold standard’ for fractionated laser resurfacing. The ability to deliver higher energies makes the Ultrapulse well suited to the treatment of acne scars, which tend to require higher energies to achieve an excellent clinical result.
A. To minimize discomfort, a topical anesthetic is used. Following the procedure, patients often experience a ‘sunburned’ feeling that subsides over two to three hours. After this, most patients report no discomfort.
A. Patients return home immediately following the procedure. The downtime is typically less than one week. The treated skin usually peels in five to six days. The skin may then be slightly pink, which typically fades within a week or two. This is easily concealed with makeup or tinted sunscreen. Dr. Jane recommends specific medical-grade products to accelerate the healing process, and our office provides patients with all instructions for post-procedure skin care.
A. Compared to traditional CO2 laser treatments, there are very few risks and complications associated with fractionated CO2 treatments. Risks are minimized if sun exposure is limited for a short period after the procedure. Treatment with the Ultrapulse laser is very safe because the treatments are very precise. Any changes in skin pigmentation are usually mild and temporary.
